PLAYA DEL CARMEN, México -- A victory by Fred Funk on Sunday in the Mayakoba Golf Classic would make Funk one of the oldest winners in PGA TOUR history, as he would be 50 years, 8 months, 11 days old in the winner's circle.
That would make him the fifth-oldest winner, behind Sam Snead (52 years, 10 months, 8 days at 1965 Greater Greensboro Open); Art Wall (51 years, 7 months, 10 days at 1975 Greater Milwaukee Open), Jim Barnes (51 years, 3 months, 7 days at 1937 Long Island Open) and John Barnum (51 years, 1 month, 5 days at 1962 Cajun Classic).
Fred Funk is looking to join Craig Stadler as just the second player to capture a PGA TOUR event after winning on the Champions Tour. After earning a Champions Tour victory in his rookie season last year, Funk rolled to a record 11-stroke victory at the Turtle Bay Championship in January, where he led wire-to-wire and played bogey-free golf over the three days.
The 11-stroke margin erased the previous mark of nine strokes by three players, the most recent being Dave Stockton at the 1993 Franklin Quest Championship. Stadler won the Ford Senior Players Championship in 2003, and the B.C. Open the following week.
Fred Funk is doing the majority of his damage on the front nine. He is 9 under par on Nos. 1-9 and 6 under par on Nos. 10-18. He also leads the field in birdies this week with 19.
Ryan Armour (T7) is the lone rookie in the top 10 through 54 holes. Armour earned his card through the PGA TOUR Qualifying School and logged his first career top-10 at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (T9) two weeks ago in just his fourth TOUR start.
Mark Brooks (T7) is looking for his first top 10 since a T10 at the 2005 EDS Byron Nelson Championship. Brooks is playing out of the Past Champion category in 2007 after his 10-year exemption for winning the 1996 PGA Championship expired after last season.
Looking for his maiden PGA TOUR victory, Skip Kendall is playing in his 377th career PGA TOUR event, third-most among active members without a victory. Jay Delsing hoas gone 535 starts without a win, while Robin Freeman has gone 378 starts without one.
The scoring average nudged over par on Saturday with the field of 79 players averaging 70.291 on the day. No. 8 played most difficult for the second time this week at 4.367. More than half (43 of 79) posted scores at par or better, with 29 of those being in the 60s.
Fred Funk has had 11 previous leads/co-leads through 54 holes (in 72-hole events) on the PGA TOUR, with six victories.

About The Mayakoba Golf Classic |
The Mayakoba Golf Classic made golf history when it became the first PGA TOUR event to ever be contested outside of the United States and Canada in February 2007. Today, the Mayakoba Golf Classic remains “Mexico’s Only PGA TOUR Event” as it prepares to enter its sixth year. The event is regarded as one of the finest on the PGA TOUR by players, their families, sponsors and the TOUR itself. With a purse of $3.7 million USD, the Mayakoba Golf Classic boasts the largest amount of prize money of any golf tournament in Latin America. Held annually in February, the tournament features 132 professional golfers participating in four rounds of stroke play competition at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, in the Riviera Maya-Cancún regions of Mexico. Johnson Wagner, a five-year veteran of the PGA TOUR, claimed the title in 2011, winning $666,000 USD. Other past champions include: Fred Funk (2007), Brian Gay (2008), Mark Wilson (2009) and Cameron Beckman (2010).

About El Camaleón Golf Club
El Camaleón Golf Club at the Mayakoba resort is yet another of Greg Norman’s masterworks. The 7,039-yard layout is unique - not just to Mexico but to the entire world of golf. The course bends through three distinct landscapes—mangrove jungles, limestone canals and stunning, oceanfront stretches of sand. El Camaleón incorporates a cenote, a massive underground cavern, into the heart of the opening fairway. The handsome, Mayan influenced clubhouse rises above the 18th green and features stunning views over the course. The adjoining practice facility and driving range are of international caliber. With Mayakoba’s unique system of lagoons, golfers will be able to step out of their rooms and into a boat, which will ferry them directly to the first tee. El Camaleón is managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
