MGC Participant Success in 2007
Fred Funk, as champion of the inaugural Mayakoba Golf Classic, cashed in with a first-place prize of $630,000 USD. But in 2007, he has not been the only MGC participant to have found tremendous success.

In addition to Funk, four other MGC participants have claimed victories on the PGA TOUR in 2007.

In the week immediately following the MGC, Mark Wilson (T66 at 2007 MGC) followed up his performance in México with a playoff win at The Honda Classic over Camilo Villegas, MGC runner-up Jose Coceres and fellow MGC participant Boo Weekley.

Not to be outdone, Weekley (sixth at 2007 MGC) tallied his first career win at the Verizon Heritage in mid-April when he posted a winning score of 14-under-par 270. Weekley has more than $1.9 million USD in prize money in 2007 and sits in 14th place in the FedExCup standings.

TOUR veteran Mark Calcavecchia (T41 at 2007 MGC) notched his 13th career TOUR victory when he took the crown at the PODS Championship in Tampa, Fla. Calcavecchia has four top-10 finishes in 2007, which puts him in 16th place in the current FedExCup standings as the PGA TOUR Playoffs near.

Most recently, Brian Bateman (T31 at 2007 MGC) added his name to the list of 2007 PGA TOUR winners when he captured the crown at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. Bateman's previous best finish had been his 31st place showing at the MGC until his win.

But it is not just those who have won on the PGA TOUR in 2007. Several other MGC participants have had plenty of success despite not yet reaching the winner's circle in 2007. MGC runner-up Jose Coceres has three top-five finishes this year. Pat Perez (T13 at 2007 MGC) has finished in the top-15 three times in 2007, including a third-place showing against a stellar field at the AT&T National in Washington, D.C., earlier this month. TOUR rookie Brandt Snedeker (T48 at 2007 MGC) has four top-10 performances in 2007, including three in his last four events.

Rave Reviews for El Camaleón

You may know that El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba made history earlier in 2007 when it was the site of México's First PGA TOUR Event. But you may not know how the PGA TOUR professionals felt about the course. Check out some of their comments about the Greg Norman-designed course.

FRED FUNK: "Condition-wise, (El Camaleón) is a 9 or a 10. It's really, really good. Golf design-wise, considering how much wind can blow down here, it's an 8 or a 9. It's the kind of golf course that rewards good play. If you play well, you can score well on it and if you're not and you don't have control of your golf ball, the course is tough enough that it's going to jump up and get you. Anything under par is a really good round and that's the sign of a really tough golf course, a really good golf course. It rewards good shots and penalizes bad shots, and that's all you can ask for."

ESTEBAN TOLEDO: "I like this golf course. I think (El Camaleón) is one of the nicest golf courses we play on the PGA TOUR. Pretty fair, long, and the fairways are great."

JOHN COOK: "Phenomenal. This golf course is great. It's a great turf to play on. And like I said earlier, the greens are as good as anything we've ever putted on."

ALEJANDRO QUIROZ: "El Camaleón is definitely a challenge. The conditions of the golf course are as best as can be. The course, not only is it beautiful, but it will not allow you to make any mistakes. It demands high precision on your shots and great accuracy."

EFREN SERNA ESPINOZA: "The golf course challenges you on each and every shot. You have to be extremely well concentrated because the wind blows from all four directions. It changes from hole to hole and a golf course that has so many challenges on each hole demands great concentration."

More About Mayakoba
Mayakoba is situated just south of Cancún on México's prized Caribbean coast--the Riviera Maya. A mere 40-minute drive from the towering hotels of Cancun, visitors will discover a completely different experience. Mayakoba, which currently features a five-star Fairmont Hotel & Resort, will also comprise four additional luxury hotels (Rosewood, Banyan Tree, Viceroy to name three), each featuring a range of culinary and spa experiences. Rosewood Mayakoba is slated for its grand opening in fall 2007, while Banyan Tree Mayakoba is expected to open in late 2008.

Other features of the Mayakoba Resort include MK Blue, a unique venue for private events situated on the shores of the Caribbean Sea and ensconced among the mangrove forests of Mayakoba. Tennis facilities are also available at Mayakoba. The Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón golf course winds through the entire property, offering an ever-changing terrain that winds gracefully from mangroves to the sea and back again. El Camaleón is, of course, the host site of the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
