Mexican President Felipe Calderon Visits Mayakoba

Mexican President Felipe Calderon recently visited Mayakoba for an official inauguration of the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, the resort's most recently launched luxury hotel. Mayakoba, host of México's Only PGA TOUR Event, received the head of state with a grand ceremony on the grounds of the Banyan Tree hotel on July 1.

Also in attendance for the ceremony were Juan Miguel Villar Mir, chairman of OHL, Rodolfo Elizondo Torres, Mexican Secretary of Tourism, Felix Gonzalez Canto, governor of the state of Quintana Roo, Roman Quian Alcocer, mayor of the municipality of Solidaridad, and several other dignitaries.

Among the items highlighted by President Calderon during his address was the importance of the sustainable development techniques employed by OHL in the construction and creation of Mayakoba. He also referred to the enormous economic impact that Mayakoba has had on the surrounding community.

“It must be noted and it must be repeated—this project is entirely sustainable. It is a project of the highest quality that adds to the Mayakoba Resort, a tourism complex which signifies a total investment of more than $1.6 billion dollars and the generation of about 2,500 direct employees and more than 7,000 indirect employees.”

As one of the world's foremost examples of development that takes place in harmony with the environment and eco-system, Mayakoba received praise from President Calderon for its dedication to taking the lead in the industry of sustainable tourism development.

“Something very important for the country and for me personally, that must be highlighted, is that Mayakoba in its design and construction is making innovations in tourism developments that protect, respect and even improve the functionality of the existing natural habitat.”

In addition to addressing dignitaries and collaborators at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, President Calderon received a comprehensive tour of the entire resort; including El Camaleón Golf Club, Mayakoba's other luxury hotel properties and its signature canal system.

“Projects like this, my friends, are a clear example that the Mexican tourism industry is on the march,” he emphasized.
