News & Notes from the MGCJune 2007
One-on-One with "The Shark"
Q: As the course designer of El Camaleón, a PGA TOUR professional and a businessman, how would you rate the inaugural Mayakoba Golf Classic?

Greg Norman: I think it was a tremendous success, thanks mainly to the dedication and leadership of OHL. Mayakoba is one of the finest luxury resorts in the world and, due to OHL's vision, we are able to turn it into a first-class sporting venue for one week of the year. Everything on the property received rave reviews-especially from the players and the PGA TOUR-and the credit for that goes to OHL and Mayakoba. We're fortunate to partner with them on such an historic venture as Mexico's first-ever TOUR event. Everyone involved is looking forward to doing it again in 2008-and making it even more perfect.

Q: Were you surprised that the winning score was 14-under-par?

Greg Norman: With conditions as tough as they were, I was impressed by how players managed to score. When the wind picks up like it did, El Camaleón is challenging - even for the world's best. (Course Superintendent) Erin Stevens and his staff did a great job in preparing the course for competition and that's what we had, a great competition that gave players a challenge but enough scoring opportunities to keep it exciting for the fans.

Q: What do you make of Fred Funk as the inaugural champion of the MGC?

Greg Norman: Fred really deserved the win after showing so much resilience in battling back pains over the weekend. Many of the other players on the leaderboard are having great years, like Boo Weekley, Jose Coceres, Mark Wilson, so that says a lot about what Fred accomplished. He is a great champion and will be a wonderful ambassador for the tournament as it continues to grow.

(Editor's note: Funk became just the second player in history to win on the PGA TOUR after winning an event on the Champions Tour. Craig Stadler was the first.)

Q: What impact is the MGC making on the growth of golf in México?

Greg Norman: One of the great effects of the event was the number of high school and college students who turned out to volunteer. They were exposed to the game of golf - many for the first time - and we look forward to having them back. Clearly, the charitable contributions of the tournament help a lot of people who are doing good work for the community. And the participation of several Mexican golfers show the youth that they can have success in this sport. The ability to bring golf at its highest level to Mexico puts the sport at the front of people's minds and at the top of the news - which will only draw more interest and encourage more to participate.

MGC Gives Back to Charity
The Mayakoba Golf Classic has donated more than $200,000 to local, national and international charities. Eight charities, including six based in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, received donations from the event.

"The Mayakoba Golf Classic is pleased to be able to make these contributions to some well-deserving charities," said Larson Segerdahl, MGC tournament director. "Charitable giving is an integral part of the PGA TOUR's effort to give back and we are proud to carry on that tradition here in Mexico. We are glad to partner with these groups and help them reach their goals and objectives."

The groups supported by the MGC include: the Lorena Ochoa Foundation, City of Joy Foundation, Angel Notion, Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen, Rotary Club of Cancun, Integral Development for the Family (DIF) of Solidaridad, Mexican Caribbean Golf Courses Association and World Golf Hall of Fame.

"As a charitable organization, our capacity to help those in need and provide the best quality of services possible for this rapidly growing project is entirely dependent on the donations we receive and so we are extremely grateful for the donation from the Mayakoba Golf Classic," said Anita Gallagher, Coordinator General of the City of Joy Foundation. "Moreover, it is particularly notable that the tournament, even its first year, has made such a strong commitment to fostering volunteering and philanthropy, especially in an area of Mexico which is often overlooked in terms of social needs."

2008 Volunteer Travel
Due to the success of group volunteer travel at the 2007 Mayakoba Golf Classic, the tournament is again inviting volunteers from all over the world to join the team and be a part of the 2008 event. This is your chance to get involved and ensure your spot is reserved!

Last year, volunteers from Naples, Fla., and Milwaukee, Wis., participated in group travel packages to combine a tropical vacation with volunteering at the historic Mayakoba Golf Classic. The MGC hopes to recruit more traveling volunteers for the coming year and encourages all to stay at the Volunteer Host Hotel. Take advantage of this opportunity to soak up the sun while being a part of one of the PGA TOUR's most exciting events.

All-inclusive packages are already being organized for interested parties in south Florida and the Milwaukee area. These packages will include airfare, airport transfers, hotel accommodations, daily transportation to and from the golf course, food and beverage (only F&B at tournament and hotel) and your volunteer uniform. For more information on these travel packages or to set up your own from a different departure city, contact MGC Tournament Manager Joe Mazzeo at joe.mazzeo@gwse.com.
