Golf PARa Todos Launches with Tremendous Success and Support

With rave reviews from all involved, the first installment of the Mayakoba Golf Classic's community golf program, Golf PARa Todos, was a smashing success. Sunday, October 7, saw nearly 300 attendees take to the practice facilities of El Camaleón Golf Club for a day of "Golf FORE Everyone."

The birth of the new event is part of the Mayakoba Golf Classic's efforts to grow the game of golf among the residents of Playa del Carmen, Cancún and all of Quintana Roo. Aiming to create a fun-filled, diverse and educational program for people of all ages, Golf PARa Todos teaches about the region's fastest-growing sport and allows participants to enjoy the company of family and friends while breaking down the barriers that surround golf.

Held at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón, the October edition of Golf PARa Todos began in earnest after a slight delay caused by a brief rain shower. The driving range was packed with first-timers, high-handicap golfers and a few seasoned veterans. Junior golfers even had their own area of the driving range where they were able to practice and receive instruction using specially-designed SNAG junior golf equipment.

Other activities of the afternoon included instruction from several golf professionals, a spectacular taco buffet, putting and chipping contests, an area of education about golf basics and golf history, the chance to snap a photo in 2007 Champion Fred Funk's image with the MGC trophy and a great raffle with plenty of prizes. Lucky winners took home MGC hats, golf balls, MGC umbrellas, Greg Norman Collection golf shirts, gift packages from General Nutrition Center, Greg Norman Estates wine and the grand prizes of complimentary rounds of golf at El Camaleón.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the November edition of Golf PARa Todos, which is scheduled for Saturday, November 10, at 3 p.m. again at El Camaleón at Mayakoba.

Special thanks go to local golf professionals Greg Bond, Calvin Nielsen, Doug Goubault and Ernesto Perez for their time and instruction; as well as the entire El Camaleón Golf Club staff, the American Junior Golf Association and sponsors Royal Table, IN Riviera Maya magazine, Pepsi, The Gym, Paseo del Carmen, Merkadoteknia.com and GNC.

Congratulations to all who participated and helped make the first edition of Golf PARa Todos such a success. Stay tuned for more information on the development of this great program and we'll see you in November!

15-Year-Old Californian Wins Inaugural Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic After Final-Round 65

Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., fired a final-round 5-under-par 65 to come from six shots behind and capture the Boys Division title at the inaugural Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic Golf with a final score of 3-under-par 207. Pearl Jin of San Gabriel, Calif., carded a 4-under-par 67 to take the Girls Division crown with a 4-under-par 209 tournament total.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic was the AJGA's first Open event in Mexico. The field consisted of 75 players, 19 of whom were from Mexico, as well as from 16 U.S. states and Canada. The 54-hole stroke play event was held at El Camaleón Golf Club, which played at 6,911 yards, par 70 for the Boys Division and 6,047 yards, par 71 for the Girls Division.

Beginning the day six shots off the lead, Kang said he did not start his round with thoughts of winning. But an impressive up-and-down on the third hole got his momentum going. Kang plugged his tee shot in a fairway bunker, and took two shots to reach the green. He drained a 20-foot uphill putt to save par.

Kang played in the group in front of the leaders and said he never knew what else was happening on the course. Gaining confidence after No. 3, Kang went on to record five birdies and no bogeys en route to his 54-hole total of 3-under-par 207.

"It's really exciting that my first win came in México," Kang said. "Now I've got to win at home too."

Second-round leader Juan Pablo Hernandez of México City, finished one shot back at 2-under-par 208. Sebastian Szirmak of Toronto, and Colby Smith of Auburn, Calif., tied for third place, while Diego Castilla of Monterrey, México, finished in fifth place with a 3-over-par 213.

In the Girls Division, Jin started her day tied for the lead with Alicia Malagon of Tampico, México. Competing in her first AJGA event, Jin said she was nervous heading into the final round with the lead but did not let it affect her performance.

At 12 years and four months old, Jin becomes the third-youngest AJGA winner this season. She was the youngest player to compete at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, where she reached the second round of match play.

Malagon shot a final-round 71 (E) for a tournament total of 213 (E), good for a second-place finish.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.

A Look at the City of Joy, an Official Beneficiary of the MGC

Giving back is a major component of the PGA TOUR and the Mayakoba Golf Classic is proud to carry on that tradition in México through its support of its official charities, such as the City of Joy.

Situated in Cancún, the City of Joy is a innovative complex of up to 10 different Homes and Programs, each of which provide specialized care and development services to a different sector of the vulnerable population; including women, children, elderly, sick and those living in conditions of extreme poverty.

The City of Joy is an ambitious project, but its work over the last six years has demonstrated that conviction, commitment and a lot of hard work really can make a change, both on an individual and community level. During the last year alone, the City of Joy helped over 16,000 people, offering services ranging from a food package or a medical check up to fulltime residential care.

Within the City of Joy, charitable funds received from the Mayakoba Golf Classic were used for the construction of a nursery in the Home for Women.

The Home for Women aims to rescue, rehabilitate and reintegrate young single mothers who have been victims of violence. However, given that the majority of young women who stay in the Home already have a few children, sometimes there are more babies and toddlers than women themselves!

The construction of the nursery allows the Home to make sure that both moms and children receive the care and education which they desperately need. The children now have their own space, a fun yet safe area in which they are supervised and given personalized care during the times that their mothers are busy in other activities. It also allows the Home to offer special children's activities, designed to promote the intellectual, psychological and social skills of the children, so important even at this early age.

In a small, but meaningful way, the nursery is one more way to break the vicious cycle of poverty and violence, and give them the start in life that they so deserve.

Motivated by respect and love for life, the City of Joy Foundation provides care and personal development options for people in situations of extreme need, strengthening support networks and encouraging the active participation of different social actors, in order to provide the most vulnerable people within Quintana Roo with opportunities for a better life.

The Mayakoba Golf Classic is dedicated to supporting local, national and international charities. This historic PGA TOUR event donates significant funds and raises awareness for its selected charities, which include the City of Joy, the Lorena Ochoa Foundation, the Mexican Caribbean Golf Courses Association, the American Junior Golf Association, the Rotary Clubs of Playa del Carmen and Cancun and Angel Notion.
