México’s Only PGA TOUR Event Launches Fotogolf Contest; Enter Today for Your Chance to Win a Spot in the 2010 Pro-Am

The Mayakoba Golf Classic, in conjunction with IN Riviera Maya magazine, is proud to announce “Fotogolf,” a new promotional contest for golfers, golf fans and PGA TOUR fans throughout México. Show us your best golf photography and you could win an opportunity to play with the pros in the 2010 Mayakoba Golf Classic Pro-Am!

To participate, take your best golf photo—funny, scenic, action or any other style. Then go to www.MayakobaGolfClassic.com/fotogolf where you can upload your photo to enter the contest. Twelve finalists will be selected and then voted on by the public to determine whose photo is the best! The winner will receive an entry into the 2010 Mayakoba Golf Classic Pro-Am. Check back often to www.MayakobaGolfClassic.com to view the entries and see how your photo stacks up with the rest. Participants can submit multiple photos.

Only residents of México over the age of 18 at the time of submission of their photo will be eligible to enter the contest. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must have a handicap of 21 or better. The contest will begin September 15, 2009, at 12 p.m. local time and will conclude on January 15, 2010 at 11:59 a.m. local time.

Mayakoba Resort Announces First Jim McLean Golf Academy in México

A state-of-the-art Jim McLean Golf Academy will be unveiled later this fall at Mayakoba, combining with the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón Golf Club to further establish Mayakoba as the destination of choice for discerning golf travelers in México. The Mayakoba location will be the first and only Jim McLean Golf Academy in México.

Slated to open October 15th, the new golf academy will now join México’s Only PGA TOUR Event as a major element of the resort’s growing recognition as México’s premier golf destination.

“Sharing a relentless pursuit of excellence, the new Jim McLean Golf Academy at El Camaleón will elevate Mayakoba’s golf experience to even higher ground,” said Juan Aguilar, Director of Mayakoba. “The addition of this award-winning golf academy reflects OHL’s unwavering commitment to offering Mayakoba owners and guests the finest destination resort experience.”

The Jim McLean Golf Academy at Mayakoba will feature a two-bay SuperStation (with the ability to expand to three bays at a moment’s notice). Students will benefit from the latest technology in golf analysis computer software as well as highly personalized instruction programs crafted by certified Jim McLean Master Instructors.

“We are pleased to be opening our golf academy at the premier resort destination in the Riviera Maya,” said Jim McLean. “Mayakoba already offers a truly world-class golf course that hosts the only PGA TOUR event in Mexico. The Jim McLean Golf Academy at Mayakoba will be the second international location for McLean. In 2008, he opened a school at Golf Santander in Madrid, Spain.

¡Viva México! Gabriela Lopez of México City Wins AJGA Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic

Gabriela Lopez of México City, became the first Mexican to win in either division at the Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic last month when she captured the Girls Division championship. Lopez finished at 1-over-par 214 to notch her first career AJGA victory.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic, México’s Only AJGA Event, was staged at El Camaleón Golf Club. The field for the 54-hole stroke-play event featured 84 players, including 42 from Mexico. El Camaleón Golf Club, home of the PGA TOUR's Mayakoba Golf Classic, played at PGA TOUR tournament yardage of 6,923 yards (par-70) in the Boys Division and at 5,822 yards (par-71) in the Girls Division.

Lopez, 15, entered the day with a five-shot lead over Alicia Malagon of Tampico, México. Her round wasn't flashy, but it was enough to secure her the win. Malagon finished in second place at 6-over-par 219.

"It is a great honor to win this event," Lopez said. "Winning my first tournament in my home country is a very nice feeling."

In the Boys Division, Rocky Khara of Sebring, Fla., held on to his second-round lead to earn the win, finishing at 6-over-par 216. Finishing second behind Khara was Sebastian Vazquez of México City at 8-over-par 218.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. More than 200 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour and have compiled more than 350 wins. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Lorena Ochoa, Brian Gay, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Davis Love III, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.

Golf PARa Todos Tops 1500 Attendees in 2009

Golf PARa Todos continues to roar along with its 2009 campaign. Through three installments of the community program, more than 1500 people have participated this year alone. The next edition of the popular golf event is scheduled for Sunday, October 11, at Mayakoba.

Golf PARa Todos aims to create a fun-filled, diverse and educational program that teaches about the game of golf and its ideals. The program encourages active participation in the game as a participant and as a fan, and facilitates the integration of golf into the lives of all those within the community.

This year's program features many new and exciting additions and upgrades, as well as all the fantastic elements you've already come to know and love. The Amigos of Golf PARa Todos will again be in attendance to help you as you begin to learn the game of golf.
