 | Forty Past MGC Participants Still Alive in Race for the FedEx Cup as PGA TOUR Playoffs Heat Up
|
|
|
With two of the four events in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedEx Cup now complete, the race for the season-long championship has heated up!
Following a win at last weekend’s Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, Webb Simpson jumped into first place with 4,711 points. The win marked Simpson’s second victory in the last three PGA TOUR events—just two weeks ago, he prevailed at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. Trailing Simpson in second place of the current FedEx Cup standings is Dustin Johnson who captured the title at the first playoffs event, The Barclay’s.
Heading into the final stretch of the playoffs, the Mayakoba Golf Classic will be well represented with two of its past champions still alive in the race for the FedEx Cup and its $10 million USD prize. Reigning MGC champion Johnson Wagner sits in 67th place after finishing tied for 25th at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
2009 MGC champion Mark Wilson is still within striking distance and a shot at claiming the FedEx Cup as he is in 17th place entering the final two playoff events. With two early victories in the 2011 PGA TOUR season, Wilson is one of only six players to have won more than once this year.
Seventy professionals will now compete in the next leg of the playoffs at the BMW Championship in Chicago next weekend, Sept. 15-18. Of the remaining 70 players, 40 have previously participated at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in its five-year history. Great players who have joined us here at Mayakoba over the years such as Matt Kuchar, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, David Toms, K.J. Choi and many more are still alive.
Stay tuned to PGATOUR.com for all the latest as the action and excitement unfolds. And be sure to catch the final round of the TOUR Championship on September 25 when the 2011 FedEx Cup champion is crowned!

 | Va Por Los Pros with Esteban Toledo: A Total Success |
|
Along with professional golfer and five-time Mayakoba Golf Classic participant Esteban Toledo and the PGA of Mexico, the MGC participated in an important fundraising event, “Va Por los PROS Mexicanos 2011” (Go for the Pros) on August 22 at La Hacienda Golf Club in Mexico City. Originally conceived by Toledo, the event raised money which will be used to send the top six Mexican professional golfers to PGA TOUR qualifying competition at the end of the year.
“I’m very happy with the response of the people who made this possible now. It’s only the first of many events and tournaments to support the pros,” Toledo said. “The sponsors were a critical piece for this and we were able to reach our goal of supporting these professionals.”
Manuel Inman, José de Jesús Rodríguez, Óscar Fraustro, José Trauwitz, José Octavio González and Armando Favela will each look to qualify for the 2012 PGA TOUR with all their expenses covered thanks to the individuals who participated and supported the initiative.
“As everyone knows, professional golf in our country is living one of its best moments and the only thing that our players are missing is a little bit of financial support to reach their goal of arriving to compete on the PGA TOUR,” said Alberto Kaneda, president of the PGA of Mexico.
Stay tuned to see the results of these six Mexicans at PGA TOUR Qualifying School to find out who will be back in action representing the tri-color at the 2012 Mayakoba Golf Classic!
